Remarkably, surviving medieval charts of the Crimea show place-names such as Susaco (Sussex) and Londina (London) on the coast, east of the Cimmerian Bosporos. So there may be some truth to the tale. It certainly provides fertile ground for fiction.

My descriptions of Greek Fire (although precise details of this lethal weapon are vague) and Alexios's innovative tactics at Xerogypsos are all based on contemporary accounts. I have drawn heavily upon the Alexiad, the famous biography of Alexios I, written by his daughter Anna Komnene.

As for Thorkell Skaldsson, the hero of these chronicles, he has much explaining to do...
